A Bump on the Tailbone
When Mark developed a persistent and painful bump on his tailbone, it started to impact his quality of life. As a pharmacy student, he was naturally inclined to look for solutions. He discovered that while pilonidal cysts are common among young men – especially those who sit for long stretches to study or drive – they are relatively unusual as far as traditional cysts go. As Mark continued his research, he was surprised that he didn’t find any skincare products intentionally developed to cleanse and soothe the tailbone area.
A Scientific Approach
Over the next year, Mark would scour medical and scientific journals that contained even a passing reference to pilonidal cysts and skincare. His training as a pharmacist helped him determine the strengths and limitations of existing data as he developed his homemade product. After months of trial and error, Mark finally landed on a natural formulation that brought him real comfort – and freed him from embarrassment.
The Right Place, The Right Time
Mark went on to secure a spot at a global biotechnology company that developed medicines for rare skin conditions, which neatly placed him next to thought leaders in the world of dermatology. It didn’t take long for Mark’s homemade formulation to come up in water-cooler conversations with experienced scientists at the company. These casual chats soon graduated to consultancy partnerships and Pilonite was born.

It takes time to do research and development the right way – and we don’t believe in cutting corners or marketing half-truths. However, the resilience of those living with pilonidal cysts inspires us to work with urgency.
